The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Istanbul

   Land in Istanbul and settle into Sultanahmet, which puts Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque within a few minutes of each other and of you. The first dinner is a rooftop, because almost every building here has one and the view across to Asia is the reason the city has been fought over for centuries.

2. Stage 02

   Old City & Cruise

   The old city in the morning: Hagia Sophia, which has been a cathedral and a mosque and is nearly 1,500 years old, the Blue Mosque with its six minarets across the square, and the Basilica Cistern underneath the street. The evening is a Bosphorus dinner cruise between two continents.

3. Stage 03

   To Cappadocia

   Fly to Cappadocia, a little over an hour, into a landscape of volcanic tuff eroded into cones and spires. Into a cave suite cut into the rock at Goreme, which is cooler and quieter than any hotel room, and up to a valley viewpoint with a bottle of local wine for the sunset.

4. Stage 04

   Balloon Dawn

   The balloon, at dawn, with a private basket if you have taken that upgrade so that it is the two of you and the pilot rather than twenty strangers. You lift with a hundred other balloons as the sun comes up over the chimneys. It is weather-called by the civil aviation authority and we always hold a second morning in reserve. A hammam ritual in the afternoon.

5. Stage 05

   Valleys

   The valleys on the ground, which most people skip and should not: the Goreme Open Air Museum, where rock-cut churches keep frescoes painted a thousand years ago, then Devrent and Pasabag, and the pottery town of Avanos on the red river. A last dinner in a cave restaurant.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   Fly home via Istanbul. Six days, two very different halves, and the specific photograph of a hundred balloons at sunrise that is now going to be on your wall.
