The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land and stay in Sultanahmet, which puts Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque within a few minutes of each other and of you. The first evening is a walk around the square between them, both floodlit, and dinner on a rooftop, which almost every building here has.

2. Stage 02

   Old City

   The old city on foot. Hagia Sophia, nearly 1,500 years old and in turn cathedral, mosque, museum and mosque again. The Blue Mosque opposite with its six minarets, closed to visitors during the five daily prayers. The Basilica Cistern under the street, then the Grand Bazaar and its four thousand shops.

3. Stage 03

   Bosphorus

   The Bosphorus by boat, up the strait between Europe and Asia past wooden waterfront mansions and Ottoman fortresses. The Spice Bazaar at Eminonu on the way back for the smell alone. A proper hammam in the afternoon: hot marble, a scrub, and a foam wash that leaves you useless for an hour.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   A last Turkish breakfast, which is a table of small plates rather than a meal, and the flight home. Three nights is enough to see the icons and not enough for the city, which is exactly why people come back.
