The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Istanbul
Land in Istanbul and go to Sultanahmet, where the great buildings are within a few minutes of each other. The first evening is a walk around the square and dinner on a rooftop, which is standard here, looking across the water at a continent you are not currently standing on.
- Stage 02
Old City
The old city on foot. Hagia Sophia, nearly 1,500 years old and in turn cathedral, mosque, museum and mosque again. The Blue Mosque opposite with its six minarets, closed during prayer times, which we work around. The Basilica Cistern below ground, then the Grand Bazaar and its four thousand shops.
- Stage 03
Bosphorus
Topkapi Palace in the morning, where the Ottoman court ran an empire for four centuries — the Harem is included in the palace ticket. Then the Bosphorus itself by boat, up the strait between Europe and Asia past the waterfront mansions, and the Spice Bazaar in Eminonu on the way back.
- Stage 04
To Cappadocia
Fly to Cappadocia, a little over an hour, and the landscape changes completely: volcanic ash compacted into soft rock and then eroded into cones, spires and ridges. Check into a cave hotel cut into the rock, then up to a viewpoint at Uchisar for the sunset over the valleys.
- Stage 05
Balloon Dawn
The balloon at dawn, lifting with a hundred others as the light comes over the chimneys, which is the photograph that sold you the trip. Flights are cleared or grounded by the civil aviation authority on the morning, so a second attempt is built into the schedule. The Goreme Open Air Museum afterwards for the rock-cut churches and their frescoes.
- Stage 06
Valleys
The underground city, which goes down eight levels and sheltered thousands of people with ventilation shafts, stables and churches carved into the rock. Then Devrent and Pasabag valleys above ground, where the formations get properly strange, and a last cave dinner.
- Stage 07
The Return
Fly home via Istanbul. Seven days, two cities that could not be less alike, and the ordinary Turkish habit of serving you tea at every single stage of it.
