The story

Tawang Monastery is four hundred years old, sits at 10,000 feet, and is the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama. It houses several hundred monks and a 28-foot gilded Buddha.

Getting there means Sela Pass at 13,700 feet, usually with snow at the edges and a frozen lake beside the road. The drive is most of the experience.
