The story

Sydney and Melbourne have argued about which is better for a century. This trip lets you judge. Sydney brings the harbour, the beaches, the bridge-climb skyline; Melbourne counters with laneway coffee, street art and the world's best breakfast culture.

The tiebreaker: the Great Ocean Road and its Twelve Apostles at dusk.

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

  1. Land in Sydney and head for Circular Quay, which settles the argument immediately: Opera House on one side, Harbour Bridge on the other, ferries crossing in between. Dinner at the quay or in The Rocks behind it, in the sandstone lanes that are the oldest part of the city.

  2. The Manly ferry from the quay, half an hour across open water and still the best-value view in the country, with the walk to Shelly Beach at the far end. Back in the afternoon for Bondi: a swim, the ocean pool at Icebergs, and the clifftop walk south towards Bronte.

  3. Free, with one obvious temptation: the BridgeClimb, which takes you up the arch to 134 metres on a harness and a walkway. Otherwise the Royal Botanic Garden and Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the postcard angle, the art gallery, and Darling Harbour when the light goes.

  4. Fly to Melbourne, around ninety minutes, and into a city that argues with Sydney about everything. The laneways are the introduction: Hosier Lane for the street art, Degraves and Centre Place for coffee taken seriously, and a rooftop bar in the evening because Melbourne invented those here.

  5. The Great Ocean Road. Out past Torquay and Bells Beach, along the coast road cut into the cliffs by returning soldiers after the First World War, through the Otway rainforest, and on to the Twelve Apostles, limestone stacks standing offshore. Timed for late light, which is when they glow.

  6. Queen Victoria Market in the morning, seven hectares and running since 1878, for breakfast and produce. Then a street-art walk, and the choice that defines the city: the MCG, which holds 100,000 and is a genuine cathedral of sport, or the National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road.

  7. One last flat white, made properly, and the flight home. Seven days, two cities, and a firm and unshakeable opinion about which one is better that you will now defend to Australians at every opportunity.
