The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Paris
Land, transfer in, and give the first evening to Montmartre: the climb to Sacre-Coeur, the square of portrait painters behind the basilica, and the city spread out below as the lights come on. An early dinner in the lanes underneath, because the long flight is still in your legs.
- Stage 02
Icons
The Louvre in the morning with a guide, which is the difference between seeing three things properly and thirty things badly. A Seine cruise in the afternoon for the bridges and the Musee d'Orsay from the water, then a booked dusk slot at the Eiffel Tower for the hourly sparkle.
- Stage 03
Paris Free
Either Versailles for the day, including the hall of mirrors, the gardens, and the Trianon estate at the far end that most visitors run out of time for; or a deliberately unplanned day of markets, the Marais, and sitting outside cafes watching Paris do the thing it is best at.
- Stage 04
Rail East
TGV Lyria to Basel, then the panoramic climb up into the Bernese Oberland. Swiss trains connect to the minute, so the changes are calm rather than a sprint. You reach Interlaken in time for the lake in the evening and the first proper look at the Jungfrau wall standing over it.
- Stage 05
Jungfraujoch
The big one. Cogwheel railway through Kleine Scheidegg, then a tunnel bored inside the Eiger itself, surfacing at 3,454 metres. Snow underfoot in July, the Aletsch glacier below, and an ice palace carved into the mountain. We move this day around to match the forecast.
- Stage 06
Valley Day
Down into Lauterbrunnen, the valley of seventy-two waterfalls, where the Staubbach falls nearly 300 metres past the village church. Cable car up to Grindelwald-First for the cliff walk fixed to the rock face, or a gentler afternoon among the chalets if heights are not the plan.
- Stage 07
Lucerne
Train across to Lucerne for the last full day: the wooden Chapel Bridge, the old town squares with their painted facades, and a cruise on the lake with the mountains standing behind it. Fondue in the evening, which at this point in Switzerland has stopped being a cliche.
- Stage 08
The Return
An easy hour by train from Lucerne into Zurich airport, and home. Eight days that opened in the Louvre and peaked above a glacier, with every connection in between handled by somebody else. Most people come back from this one quietly annoyed about how good the trains were.
