- Stage 01
Arrive Afloat
Fly into Srinagar and go straight onto the water. The heritage houseboats are carved walnut and cedar from the 1920s and 30s, with sitting rooms, verandas and a family who have run the same boat for generations. The first evening is the veranda and the light going off the lake.
- Stage 02
Gardens
The Mughal gardens at golden hour rather than midday, which is the difference between a queue and a photograph. Nishat and Shalimar step down towards the water under chinars, and Pari Mahal above them at dusk gives you the whole lake and the city beyond it.
- Stage 03
Old City
The old city on foot. Jamia Masjid, built around 378 deodar pillars, the shrines, and the lanes of coppersmiths and papier-mache workshops. Tea from a samovar, and a stop for saffron and dry fruit, which is the one thing worth carrying home from Kashmir.
- Stage 04
The Return
A sunrise shikara before the flight, which is when the lake is still, the mist is on the water and the vegetable growers are already out. Three nights, most of them afloat, and a short trip that people consistently describe as longer than it was.
