The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land at Colombo and drive to Udawalawe, around four hours inland and south. Arriving the night before matters: the gates open early and the animals are active in the first two hours. An early dinner at the lodge, a briefing, and an alarm set for something uncivilised.

2. Stage 02

   Udawalawe

   Udawalawe at first light. Sri Lanka's tourism board calls it the best place in the country to see wild elephants all year round, with herds of up to a hundred and very little undergrowth around the reservoir to hide them. The Elephant Transit Home in the afternoon, where orphaned calves are fed and later released rather than kept.

3. Stage 03

   To Yala

   East to Yala, which holds one of the highest leopard densities anywhere. An evening game drive to start, because the light is good and the cats move at dusk. Yala is scrub, rock outcrops and lagoons rather than open plain, so sightings are a matter of patience and a good tracker.

4. Stage 04

   Yala

   A dawn drive, which is the one that most often produces a leopard, along with sloth bears, crocodiles and a great deal of birdlife. Back to the lodge for a late breakfast, and the afternoon at the beach, because Yala runs to the coast and almost nobody uses it.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   Back to Colombo and the flight home. Four nights, two parks, and the specific memory of a vehicle full of people going completely silent at the same moment.
