The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land at Colombo and drive south to Bentota, about two hours down the coast road. The beach here is wide and the river meets the sea at one end, which makes it calmer than the open coast. An evening on the sand to reset after the flight, and an early night for the same reason.

2. Stage 02

   Mangroves

   The Madu river in the morning: a mangrove estuary of small islands navigated by boat, with monitor lizards, kingfishers and a cinnamon island where they still peel bark by hand. A turtle hatchery afterwards, where the honest ones release the same night rather than keeping animals for photographs.

3. Stage 03

   To Mirissa

   Further south to Mirissa. Coconut Tree Hill on the way, which is a headland of palms above the sea and takes ten minutes. A beginner surf lesson at Weligama in the afternoon, where the break is slow and forgiving and designed for exactly this.

4. Stage 04

   Whales

   Out before dawn for the whales. Mirissa sits near a continental shelf drop-off where blue whales, the largest animals that have ever lived, pass close to shore between roughly November and April. Sightings are good but never promised, and the responsible boats keep their distance. Beach for the afternoon.

5. Stage 05

   Free Day

   Free. Snorkelling, a hammock, or the stilt fishermen at Koggala towards sunset, who now pose more than they fish but are still a photograph worth having. Nothing here needs booking, which is the point of the day.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   Back up the coast to Colombo and the flight home. Five nights, one of the great wildlife encounters if the sea cooperates, and a tan acquired at a very low effort level.
