The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Singapore

   Land in Singapore and start on the water: a bumboat along the Singapore River past the old godowns, now restaurants, with the financial district lit up behind them. Clarke Quay afterwards for dinner and the noise, which is the part of Singapore that stays up.

2. Stage 02

   Icons Day

   The icons in one day, which works because they are all around Marina Bay. Gardens by the Bay for the Cloud Forest and its indoor waterfall, the SkyPark at the top of Marina Bay Sands for the skyline at sunset, then back down to the Supertree Grove for the free Garden Rhapsody light show, which runs at 7.45pm and 8.45pm nightly.

3. Stage 03

   Safari & Sentosa

   Sentosa by cable car, which is the right way to arrive because the ride crosses the harbour with the container port spread out below. Beaches, the luge and the aquarium during the day. After dark, the Night Safari: an open tram through habitats lit to mimic moonlight, with the animals actually awake.

4. Stage 04

   North to KL

   North across the causeway to Kuala Lumpur, around five hours by coach with the border formalities. KL announces itself with the Petronas Towers, best seen at night from the park below when the steel is lit. Supper at Jalan Alor, which is a whole street of grills and plastic stools.

5. Stage 05

   Caves & Genting

   Batu Caves first thing: 272 painted steps up to a limestone cavern with a temple inside it, and macaques who will take your sunglasses. Then Genting Highlands, about an hour north, reached by the Awana SkyWay: a 2.8-kilometre, roughly ten-minute cable car ride through rainforest to just over 1,700 metres.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   A last KL morning and the flight home from there rather than back-tracking. Six days, two countries, two very different versions of Southeast Asia, and two passport stamps for the price of one trip.
