The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   To Shimla

   Arrive in Shimla, the old summer capital, which sits along a ridge at about 2,200 metres. The Mall Road and the Ridge in the evening, with the church at one end and the whole Himalaya on the horizon when the cloud clears. A room with a valley view and a fireplace.

2. Stage 02

   Kufri & Around

   Kufri and the viewpoints above town in the morning, then an hour on the toy train if the timings suit, which is a narrow-gauge line through 102 tunnels and is UNESCO-listed. A cafe dinner back in Shimla, which is small enough to do everything on foot.

3. Stage 03

   To Manali

   North to Manali along the Beas, which is a long drive and a beautiful one, with the river beside the road for most of it. Check in to an orchard property on the quieter side of the valley, and take the evening slowly after the drive.

4. Stage 04

   Solang

   Solang for the snow, which is present from around December to March and replaced by paragliding and zorbing the rest of the year. The ropeway runs up the side of the valley for the view. The evening is deliberately unscheduled.

5. Stage 05

   Manali Slow

   Hadimba temple in the morning, a cedar shrine built in 1553 and set in a deodar grove, then brunch in Old Manali, which is cafes and cobbles and a completely different pace from the main town. The candlelit dinner and the photo session are this evening.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   A late checkout and the overnight coach home. Five nights, two hill stations, and the fact that the classic honeymoon circuit is classic for reasons that survive contact with it.
