The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Saigon

   Land in Ho Chi Minh City, still Saigon to most people who live there, and go straight to Ben Thanh market for a food crawl. The city is wider, louder and faster than Hanoi and makes no apology for it. A rooftop bar in the evening, looking down at traffic that never quite stops.

2. Stage 02

   History Day

   The heavy day, done in the right order. The Cu Chi tunnels north of the city first: 250 kilometres of hand-dug network that you can go down into, which is claustrophobic and instructive. The War Remnants Museum in the afternoon, unflinching and told from the Vietnamese side.

3. Stage 03

   The Delta

   Down into the Mekong Delta. A floating market where boats sell wholesale from dawn, each hanging its produce from a pole so buyers can see it from a distance. Then narrow creeks by sampan under the palms, island orchards, and a lunch of river fish that is often the best meal of the trip.

4. Stage 04

   Free & Easy

   Free, and the city rewards it. The Central Post Office and the cafe apartment block on Nguyen Hue are the usual answers, or the tailors on Le Cong Kieu, or a coffee crawl, since Vietnamese coffee here comes with condensed milk and no negotiation.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   A last ca phe sua da and the flight home. Four nights, one tunnel network, one delta, and an ongoing caffeine dependency that begins at roughly nine in the morning on day one.
