The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Jaipur

   Land in Jaipur and spend the evening at the City Palace and the bazaars around it, which is a gentle start. Jaipur is the gateway rather than the point of this trip, so the itinerary treats it accordingly and moves on in the morning.

2. Stage 02

   To Ranthambore

   East to Ranthambore, around four hours. Check in and use the afternoon for the briefing: how zones are allotted, why the vehicle matters, and what the realistic odds are. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve covers around 1,400 square kilometres, so sightings are good but never promised.

3. Stage 03

   Safari I

   The dawn safari, which is the one with the best chance: cats move at first light and the park is cold and quiet. Zones are assigned by the forest department rather than chosen. The afternoon is Ranthambore fort, a tenth-century hill fort inside the reserve, with langurs and enormous views.

4. Stage 04

   Safari II

   A second game drive, which is the point of staying two nights: one drive is a lottery and two is a reasonable bet. The lakes in the core zones are where the tigers come to drink and where the sambar and crocodiles are regardless. Afternoon at the lodge.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   Back to Jaipur and the flight home. Two safaris, one ruined fort in the middle of a jungle, and either the photograph everyone wants or a very good reason to come back.
