The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Jaipur
Land in Jaipur and go to the bazaars, which are the right introduction: Johari for jewellery, Bapu for textiles and juttis, and the sheer noise of a working market rather than a monument. Dinner is Rajasthani and heavier than you expect.
- Stage 02
Jaipur
Amber Fort early, eleven kilometres out, with the mirrored Sheesh Mahal inside and the lake below. Hawa Mahal on the way back, which is a five-storey facade of 953 windows built so royal women could watch the street unseen. The City Palace and Jantar Mantar in the afternoon.
- Stage 03
To Pushkar
West to Pushkar, about three hours. The town is built around a lake that Hindus hold to be one of the most sacred in India, and it has one of the only Brahma temples anywhere. The evening aarti at the ghats, when lamps go onto the water, is the reason to arrive before sunset.
- Stage 04
Pushkar
Pushkar slowly. The Brahma temple in the morning, then the cafes, which are a leftover of the town's long backpacker history and serve better coffee than anywhere in Rajasthan. The desert edge at sunset. In November the camel fair turns all of this into something else entirely.
- Stage 05
The Return
Back to Jaipur for the flight home, around three hours the way you came. Four nights, one fort city built to show off and one temple town built to pray in, close enough to be a morning apart and about as different as two places in one state can be.
