The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Jaisalmer
Arrive in Jaisalmer, which is built from the same yellow sandstone as the ground it stands on and turns gold in the late light. The evening is the fort lit up from below, seen from a rooftop, which is the introduction the town deserves before you go inside it.
- Stage 02
The Fort
The fort in the morning. Jaisalmer is one of the very few living forts in the world, with around three thousand people still inside the walls, so you are walking through a functioning town rather than a monument. Patwon ki Haveli afterwards for the carved facades, and Gadisar lake at dusk.
- Stage 03
Dunes
Out to the Sam dunes in the afternoon, about forty minutes west. A camel to a dune for sunset, which is touristy and still works, then the desert camp: tents, a fire, folk musicians of the Manganiar tradition, and Kalbeliya dancers. The stars here are the part nobody photographs well.
- Stage 04
Around
Kuldhara in the morning, an abandoned village left in a single night in the 1820s according to the story, now roofless lanes and a temple. The war museum on the way back, which covers the 1965 and 1971 campaigns fought not far from here and is more affecting than expected.
- Stage 05
The Return
The train or the flight home. Four nights, one living fort, one night in the Thar, and a strong case that Jaisalmer is the most atmospheric town in Rajasthan precisely because it is the furthest to reach.
