The story
The Shotover runs through narrow schist canyons and the boats go through them at speed, close in, with 360-degree spins thrown in when the driver feels like it.
It is the only operator permitted in the canyons themselves. Twenty-five minutes on the water, and you will be wet and slightly stunned at the end of it.
What happens
The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.
-
Transfer from central Queenstown down to the Shotover canyon base, about fifteen minutes. Safety briefing, life jacket and spray jacket, then roughly twenty-five minutes on the water in a boat built to run fast through shallow water. The canyon section is the reason to take this operator rather than another: they hold the only concession to run it, and the boat goes through rock walls close enough that passengers instinctively pull their arms in. Full 360-degree spins happen whenever the driver raises a finger, which he does without warning. You will be wet, and in winter you will be extremely cold, and neither will matter. Transfers back to town are included.
