The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Phuket Landing

   Land at Phuket and go to Old Phuket Town rather than the beach, because almost nobody does and it is the most interesting part of the island: Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art, and coffee taken seriously. Karon or Kata for the sunset, and an early night before the boats start.

2. Stage 02

   Phi Phi Day

   Speedboat out to Phi Phi. Maya Bay is the one from the film, reopened with visitor limits and a walkway, and busy, so you go early. Snorkelling stops at Pileh Lagoon and Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don, and back across in the afternoon with the sea getting up.

3. Stage 03

   Across to Krabi

   Across to Krabi, either by road around the bay or by ferry. Ao Nang in the evening, which is the practical base for everything that follows: a beach road, a night market, and long-tails pulled up on the sand waiting for tomorrow.

4. Stage 04

   Four Islands

   The four-island circuit by speedboat: Poda, Chicken Island with its rock spire, Tup Island where a sandbar appears between two islands at low tide and you can walk across it, and Phra Nang beach under the cliffs. Snorkelling at each, lunch on the sand.

5. Stage 05

   Railay & Mangroves

   Kayaking at Ao Thalane in the morning, through mangrove channels between limestone walls with kingfishers and, at the right tide, monkeys on the banks. Railay in the afternoon, reachable only by boat, where the climbing cliffs come straight down to the beach. Seafood dinner to finish.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   A last morning and the flight home out of Krabi or back via Phuket. Five nights, two provinces, somewhere around eight islands depending on how you count sandbars, and a permanently higher standard for what a beach should look like.
