The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Kathmandu
Land in Kathmandu and settle into Thamel. The city is at around 1,400 metres, so it is cooler and thinner than most arrivals expect. The first evening is the streets themselves: prayer flags, trekking shops, and momo for dinner, which you will eat repeatedly and not tire of.
- Stage 02
Heritage
The heritage day. Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, best at dusk when pilgrims circle it and butter lamps are lit. Swayambhunath on its hill, reached by a long stair with resident monkeys. And a durbar square of tiered pagoda temples, visibly rebuilt since 2015.
- Stage 03
Nagarkot
East to Nagarkot on the valley rim at about 2,100 metres, an hour and a half out. Sunset from the ridge, then up before dawn for the Himalayan skyline: on a clear morning the range runs from Annapurna across to Everest, which is a long way off and still unmistakable.
- Stage 04
To Pokhara
To Pokhara, either a scenic six-hour drive along the Trisuli river or a 25-minute flight with the range out of the right-hand window. Lakeside in the afternoon, which is flat, green and about as relaxed as Nepal gets. A boat on Phewa lake before dinner.
- Stage 05
Sarangkot
Up to Sarangkot for dawn, which gives you Annapurna and Machapuchare turning gold from close range. Paragliding off the same ridge afterwards if you want it, as Pokhara is one of the best sites in the world for it. The rest of the day is the lake and the bazaar.
- Stage 06
The Return
Fly home via Kathmandu, with the Everest mountain flight bookable as a morning add-on before departure if the weather is clear. Five nights, two cities, and a range you will keep looking for out of every window.
