The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Kathmandu

Land in Kathmandu and go into Thamel, which is narrow streets, trekking shops and noise. The valley sits at about 1,400 metres so the air is thinner and cooler than you expect. An easy first evening and an early dinner, because the heritage day starts properly.

  2. Stage 02

    Heritage

The Kathmandu valley's world heritage sites. Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas anywhere, circled clockwise by pilgrims at dusk; Swayambhunath on its hill with the monkeys and the painted eyes; and a durbar square of pagoda temples, partly rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake and openly so.

  3. Stage 03

    To Chitwan

South to Chitwan, around five hours down out of the hills into the Terai lowlands, which are flat, hot and subtropical and feel like a different country. Arrive for the afternoon, and the evening is the riverbank at sunset watching for whatever comes down to drink.

  4. Stage 04

    Safari

A full safari day. A jeep drive through sal forest and grassland, where one-horned rhino are common and tigers are present but rarely seen, and a dugout canoe down the Rapti river past gharial and mugger crocodiles on the banks. A Tharu cultural evening with stick dancing to finish.

  5. Stage 05

    Jungle Walk

A guided walk in the morning, on foot with two naturalists, which is a completely different level of attention from a vehicle. The elephant breeding centre afterwards, and a bird walk, since Chitwan has over five hundred recorded species.

  6. Stage 06

    The Return

Back up to Kathmandu by road or the short flight, and home. Five nights, one valley of temples, one lowland jungle, and the surprise that the best wildlife in Nepal is nowhere near a mountain.
