1. Step 01

   The Day

   A four o'clock pickup from your door, which is the only unpleasant part and is non-negotiable, because the whole day depends on being on the ramparts at Nandi Hills before the sun. At 1,478 metres the hill stands above the morning inversion layer, so on a good day you are looking across a flat sea of cloud with other hilltops as islands, which lasts about forty minutes. Down for a benne dosa breakfast at one of the old Bangalore institutions, where the butter is the point. Lalbagh afterwards for the glasshouse and the roughly three-billion-year-old rock outcrop in the middle of it, then a craft brewery in the afternoon, because Bangalore has more of them than anywhere else in India and a tasting flight is the right way to end a day that started at four. Dropped home by six.
