The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   To Mysore

   Drive to Mysore in the morning, around three hours from Bangalore. The palace is the point: an Indo-Saracenic building finished in 1912, and on Sunday evenings and through Dasara it is lit by some ninety-seven thousand bulbs, which is as absurd and as good as it sounds. Devaraja market before that.

2. Stage 02

   Up the Hairpins

   Up the hairpins to Ooty, skirting Bandipur, where the road passes through tiger reserve and evening traffic is restricted for that reason. Twenty-six hairpins on the Gudalur side, climbing to about 2,200 metres. Ooty lake in the evening, which is pedal boats and candy floss and entirely fine.

3. Stage 03

   Nilgiri Day

   The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO-listed rack railway from 1908, taken for a section rather than the full five-hour run. A tea factory for the tasting, and Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 metres, which is either a panorama or a cloud.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   The botanical gardens in the morning, laid out in 1897 and worth an hour, then down the hill and home, with a stop for the hand-made chocolate the town has decided it is known for. Three nights, one palace, one rack railway, and the standard South Indian long weekend done properly.
