The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Into the Clouds
Fly to Guwahati and drive up into Meghalaya, which means abode of clouds and earns it. Shillong sits at about 1,500 metres and was the colonial summer capital, so it is pine trees, churches and a distinctly un-Indian climate. An evening at Police Bazar, which is where the town eats.
- Stage 02
Waterfall Day
A gentler day to start. Elephant Falls in three tiers just outside town, Shillong Peak for the view over the plateau when the cloud lifts, and Ward's Lake in the middle of the city for an amble. Meghalaya rewards low expectations about visibility and high ones about green.
- Stage 03
The Big Trek
The big one. The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is reached by around 3,500 steps down and the same number back up, and the bridges themselves are grown rather than built, from the aerial roots of rubber figs trained across streams over decades. Swim in the pool at the bottom.
- Stage 04
Dawki & Mawlynnong
East to Dawki, where the Umngot river runs so clear in the dry season that boats appear to float above the riverbed, which is a real photograph and not an edit. Then Mawlynnong in the afternoon, billed as Asia's cleanest village, with a bamboo skywalk and a very organised sense of itself.
- Stage 05
Under the Hills
Caving at Krem Mawmluh, one of the longest cave systems in India, done with headlamps and a guide and involving water up to the waist in places. Nohkalikai afterwards, the tallest plunge waterfall in the country at 340 metres, dropping into a green pool below Cherrapunji.
- Stage 06
The Return
Back down to Guwahati and the flight home. Five nights in the wettest place on earth, bridges made of living tree, and a pair of legs that will remember the 3,500 steps for about a week.
