The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Overnight to Manali

   The overnight Volvo from Delhi, which gets the boring part of the journey done while you are asleep and deposits you in Manali at breakfast. Check in, and the first day is deliberately low-effort while the altitude and the bus wear off.

2. Stage 02

   Old Manali

   Old Manali, which is the other side of the river and the reason people come: cobbled lanes, cafes with cushions on the floor, and the Jogini waterfall walk, about forty-five minutes up through apple orchards and a village to a fall you can stand under. Orchard sunset after.

3. Stage 03

   Solang Day

   Solang in the morning for whatever the season offers, paragliding and zipline in summer, snow in winter, all of it optional. Hadimba temple in the afternoon, a cedar-shingled shrine built in the sixteenth century in a grove of deodars that is somehow always ten degrees cooler.

4. Stage 04

   To Kasol

   South then east into the Parvati valley to Kasol, which is small, riverside and full of German bakeries for reasons that are now historical. The camp is on the river, the water is glacial and loud, and the evening is a bonfire because there is not much else and that is the point.

5. Stage 05

   Chalal & Tosh

   Chalal in the morning, a twenty-minute forest walk across the river from Kasol, then up to Tosh for the afternoon, which is the last village on that road and looks down the whole valley. Manikaran on the way back for the gurudwara, where langar is cooked in the hot springs.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   The overnight Volvo back. Five nights, two valleys, a great deal of river noise, and the specific frequency shift that happens to people who spend a week at 2,000 metres with poor phone signal.
