The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land at Male and cross to the island, by speedboat or seaplane depending on the atoll; seaplanes fly in daylight only, so the international timings are booked around it. Into the beach villa, and the first swim is straight off the sand in front of it, about twenty steps away.

2. Stage 02

   Sandbank

   A sandbank in the morning: a strip of sand with nothing on it, dropped off with a picnic and collected later, which is the Maldives at its most absurd and best. Snorkelling on the house reef on the way back, and a spa hour in the afternoon.

3. Stage 03

   Sea Day

   A sunset cruise, with a reasonable chance of dolphins on the way out, and a last swim as the light goes. Otherwise nothing is arranged, deliberately: three nights is short enough that the temptation to fill it is exactly what you should resist.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   The transfer back to Male and the flight home. Three nights is the smallest useful unit of Maldives, and it is genuinely enough to arrive wound up and leave unrecognisable.
