The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival & Check Dive

   Arrive, transfer out, and go straight into the practicalities: gear fitting, weight check and a shallow checkout dive on the house reef in the afternoon. It is a formality for certified divers and the first real breath underwater for anyone doing Discover Scuba, and both are taken seriously.

2. Stage 02

   Manta Day

   Manta day. The cleaning stations are coral outcrops where mantas come to hover while wrasse work over them, and the dive is a matter of settling on the sand at a respectful distance and waiting. When a four-metre animal comes in over your head, nobody ever remembers to check their gauge.

3. Stage 03

   Channels

   Channel dives, where the tide runs between atolls and everything big comes to feed in it. You drop in, hook on or drift, and grey reef sharks, eagle rays and schooling jacks come past in the current. It is the most exhilarating diving in the country and it is entirely about timing the tide.

4. Stage 04

   Night Dive

   The night dive, which is the one people are nervous about and then talk about for years. Torch off for a minute and the water lights up with bioluminescence as you move a hand through it. Turtles sleep wedged under coral heads, and the reef swaps its entire day shift for a different cast.

5. Stage 05

   Last Dives

   Two morning dives, then the no-fly clock starts, so the afternoon is a hammock whether you like it or not. Twenty-four hours between your last dive and the flight is not negotiable and the schedule is built around it rather than pushed against it.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   Transfer to Male and fly home. Six days, eight to ten guided dives, and a logbook with manta cleaning stations and a channel drift in it, which are two of the entries divers everywhere else are slightly jealous of.
