The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Breathe
Fly into Leh at 3,500 metres and do nothing whatsoever. This is a mandatory acclimatisation day, not a soft option: the flight takes you from sea level to three and a half kilometres in ninety minutes and the body needs the time. Tea, water, a short flat walk at most.
- Stage 02
Monastery Morning
Thiksey at dawn for the morning prayers, which begin around six with horns and drums in a room full of butter lamps, and are open to visitors who sit quietly at the back. Shanti Stupa for sunset over the town, and the Leh market in between, at a deliberately slow pace.
- Stage 03
Over Khardung La
North over Khardung La at 5,359 metres, which is signed as one of the highest motorable roads in the world and is bitterly cold at the top whatever the season. Down into Nubra, and the dunes at Hunder in the evening with Bactrian camels crossing them in silhouette.
- Stage 04
Nubra to Pangong
The long drive to Pangong along the Shyok river, which is the best road day of the trip: no barriers, a widening valley, and occasional water across the track. The lake arrives suddenly. Camp on the shore at 4,350 metres, where the night is cold and the sky is absurd.
- Stage 05
Pangong Sunrise
Sunrise on Pangong, which shifts through the blues as the light comes over the ridge and is the reason people put up with the camp. Then back to Leh over Chang La at 5,360 metres, arriving in the afternoon.
- Stage 06
Leh Free Day
Free. Rafting on the Zanskar is the usual add-on, grade two to three and startlingly cold. Otherwise Leh itself: the old town below the palace, the German bakeries, and the shops selling pashmina and apricot everything.
- Stage 07
The Return
Fly out over the Himalaya, which on a clear morning is a flight worth having a window for. Six nights, three passes above 5,000 metres, and a specific quality of silence at Pangong that people keep trying and failing to describe.
