The story

Khao Chi Chan, the Buddha Mountain, is a hill in Na Chom Thian, Sattahip district, whose rock face carries the outline of a seated Buddha, engraved with lasers. It was made in tribute to King Rama IX on the 50th anniversary of his accession, shows the Buddha in the attitude of subduing Mara, and is named Maha Vajira Uttamobhassada. The gardens at its foot are kept by the Royal Thai Marine Corps, and it is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm (Tourism Authority of Thailand, checked 24 Sep 2026).

Nearby, on the Khao Chi Chan to Wat Yan road, is Silverlake Vineyard: more than 1.6 million square metres of vines beside a reservoir, with twelve grape varieties that are harvested through the year. Visitors buy grape juice and grape products at the front, and the reservoir with the hills behind it is the view people photograph (Tourism Authority of Thailand, checked 24 Sep 2026).

What it feels like: a drive out of the city into open country. At Khao Chi Chan the scale is the thing: you stand in the garden and the Buddha fills the cliff above you, and you understand why people stop talking for a minute. The vineyard is gentler, rows of vines, water and hills, and a cold glass of grape juice before the drive back. It is an easy outing for a family from Ahmedabad that wants something other than the beach.

Who this suits, and why: multigenerational families and active seniors, for whom it is a calm, short outing with the vehicle waiting; the school-holiday family on a slower day; couples who want the vineyard view.
