The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Kochi
Land in Kochi in the rains, which is when Kerala is greenest, cheapest and least crowded. Fort Kochi between showers, which is how everything here is done from June to September: the rain arrives hard, lasts an hour, and then the light comes back extraordinary.
- Stage 02
Athirappilly
North to Athirappilly, which at the height of the monsoon is a completely different waterfall from the dry-season version: eighty feet high, brown with silt and audible long before it is visible. The jungle stay nearby means you hear it all night.
- Stage 03
To Alleppey
South to Alleppey and onto the houseboat, with the rain on the roof and the deck for watching it. Monsoon is the one season the backwaters are not busy, and a boat with all its doors open in a downpour is a genuinely better experience than the same boat in March.
- Stage 04
Village Day
The village day: canoe lanes too narrow for the houseboat, a toddy shop for lunch, which is fermented palm sap and fish curry and is the most local meal in Kerala. A Kalaripayattu display in the evening, one of the oldest martial arts in the world and startlingly acrobatic.
- Stage 05
Marari Beach
Marari beach, where the Arabian Sea in monsoon is grey, loud and not for swimming, which is fine, because the point is a seafood dinner and a veranda. This is the day the trip stops moving.
- Stage 06
The Return
Fly home from Kochi. Five nights in the season most itineraries avoid, at roughly half the price, in a state that spends the other eight months trying to look this green.
