The story

Kaziranga holds two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinos, and in the tall grass an elephant gets you closer than a vehicle ever will — partly because the rhinos mind it less.

The dawn ride goes out while there is still mist on the grassland. It is short, about an hour, and it is the sighting people remember.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. A pre-dawn transfer to the range gate, because elephant safaris run in a single early slot and the permits are issued the day before. Roughly an hour on elephant-back through grass that stands three to four metres high, which is precisely why this works: a jeep cannot enter it and an elephant simply walks through. One-horned rhino are routinely met at ten or fifteen metres, which is close enough to hear them breathe, along with wild buffalo, swamp deer and hog deer that you would never spot from a road. The mist sits on the Brahmaputra floodplain until the sun burns it off, which is the hour that makes every photograph from Kaziranga look the way it does. Back at the lodge for breakfast by about eight.
