The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Srinagar

   Fly into Srinagar and take the Mughal gardens in the afternoon, Nishat and Shalimar, terraced down to the lake under chinar trees with water running through them by gravity alone. The night is on a houseboat: carved walnut panelling, a veranda over the water, and absolute quiet after dark.

2. Stage 02

   Dal Sunrise

   Out on the lake at dawn, which is the only time to see the floating vegetable market, where growers trade from shikaras before sunrise. Then the old city: Jamia Masjid, the shrines, the coppersmiths, and the spice and dry-fruit shops that are the reason to bring an empty bag.

3. Stage 03

   Gulmarg

   Up to Gulmarg, about two hours and 1,100 metres higher through pine forest. The gondola's first phase reaches Kongdoori at 3,080 metres; phase two goes on to Apharwat at 3,980 where there is snow year-round. Meadow walks at the top, and the ride down is better than the ride up.

4. Stage 04

   To Pahalgam

   Across to Pahalgam, through the saffron fields at Pampore and the willow groves where cricket bats are made. The town sits where two rivers meet at about 2,200 metres. An evening beside the Lidder, which is loud, cold and clear.

5. Stage 05

   Betaab & Aru

   The valleys above Pahalgam by local taxi, which is the only vehicle allowed up. Betaab for the pines and the river, Aru further on for the meadow, and pony trails from either if you want them. A riverside lunch between the two.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   Back to Srinagar and the flight home. Five nights, one houseboat, one gondola near four thousand metres, and a fairly clear understanding of why people keep using the word paradise about this valley.
