The story

When a week's off the table: Tokyo's essentials — Shibuya, Asakusa, teamLab — plus a full Mt Fuji day at Kawaguchiko with the pagoda view. Fast, dense, unforgettable.

  1. Land in Tokyo and get straight out into it, because with five days there is no acclimatisation budget. Shinjuku after dark: neon stacked up the buildings, the tiny grill bars of Omoide Yokocho, and a city that is entirely safe to wander in at midnight on your first night.

  2. The big three in one day, which is possible because the trains make it possible. Asakusa and Senso-ji in the morning down the Nakamise approach, teamLab in the middle of the day, and Shibuya in the evening for the crossing, watched first from above and then from inside it.

  3. Out to Mt Fuji. Kawaguchiko is one of the five lakes at the northern foot, and the classic view is from the Chureito Pagoda above it, which costs you 398 steps and returns the pagoda, the lake and the mountain in a single frame. Clear mornings are commonest in winter and early spring.

  4. Tsukiji outer market for breakfast, which is the right meal to have there: tamagoyaki on a stick, grilled scallops, knife shops and dashi stalls. Then Ginza for the department store food halls in the basements, and a last dinner somewhere unhurried.

  5. Fly home. Five days is short for Japan and this is built to admit that rather than pretend otherwise: the icons, one mountain, and the pacing arranged so that you are not changing hotels or dragging bags around on the days that matter.
