The story

Phang Nga Bay lies in the neighbouring province of Phang Nga, and much of it is Ao Phang Nga National Park: about 250,000 rai, or 100,000 acres, on land and at sea, with some 40 islands, long beaches and mangroves, declared a national park in 1981 (tourismthailand.org, checked 24 Sep 2026). Among its landmarks is Khao Tapu, also written Ko Tapu: a limestone column about 20 metres high rising out of the sea, which from a distance looks like a nail ('tapu' in Thai); the sea and the weather have worn its base slimmer than its top. It was already popular before it appeared in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, and it has been called James Bond Island ever since. About 40 metres away is Khao Phing Kan, twin peaks that were once a single hill: earth movement split it and the sea wore at its base, so the smaller peak now leans against the larger at an angle of about 75 degrees. Steps climb its side to a view over the bay. The park also keeps prehistoric paintings on its cliffs.
