The story

Ko Hong, also called Ko Laopilae, is a limestone island in the Mu Ko Hong group of Than Bok Khorani National Park, off the Krabi coast (tourismthailand.org, checked 24 Sep 2026). Its front beach curves like a bird in flight, fine white sand over clear, emerald-green water, and at one end an iron stairway of 419 steps climbs to a viewpoint looking round over the islands of Krabi and Phang Nga. On the far side is Ko Hong Lagoon, Thale Nai, a wide room of sea closed in by high cliffs, with green water where boats moor and people swim; boats can only enter through one channel, and only when the sea is high enough. The beach has a national park visitor centre, a small shop and restrooms. This version goes out by long-tail boat, the narrow wooden boat with its engine on a long shaft at the stern, with lunch, for about 7 hours. The operator also sells the same island by speedboat with snorkelling, as a separate tour.

What it feels like: slower and closer to the water than the speedboat. The long-tail sits low, the engine drones behind you, spray comes over the side now and then, and the islands come up gradually rather than in a rush. It suits people who would rather look around than be hurried. When the tide lets the boat into the lagoon, the cliffs close round and the sea goes quiet, and that is the moment the day is for. Then the beach, white sand and clear green water, and lunch.

Who this suits, and why: couples and honeymooners who like the idea of a traditional boat; friends groups and budget-minded families who want Hong Island for less than the speedboat; and families with teenagers. A long-tail is open to sun and spray, so ask your captain about shade on board; toddlers and anyone who feels the heat may be more comfortable on the speedboat day.
