The experience outline

1. Step 01

   Base

   Meet at the base station and get geared up first, because winter clothing, boots and gloves rent for very little at Gulmarg and standing in a queue at 2,650 metres in ordinary shoes is a mistake people make once. Your guide handles the ticket queue, which in peak season is the longest part of the day.

2. Step 02

   The Ride

   Phase one climbs to Kongdoori at 3,080 metres, which is where the snow-play happens and where most people stop. Phase two continues to Apharwat at 3,950 metres and is weather-called on the morning, sometimes on the hour; when it runs, you are on the ridge with the Pir Panjal in every direction.

3. Step 03

   Snow Hours

   Snow hours: sledging, which is rented at the top for a negotiated price, snowballs, and the ski slope if you want an hour's lesson. Then kahwa, which is saffron and cardamom tea and the local answer to being cold, before the ride down and the drive back to Srinagar.
