The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Paris

Land at Charles de Gaulle and transfer to a central hotel. The first evening is Montmartre: the steps below Sacre-Coeur, the painters' square behind it, and the whole city laid out underneath while the jet lag wears off. Dinner nearby and early, because tomorrow starts properly.

  2. Stage 02

    Paris Icons

The Louvre in the morning with a guide who knows which rooms to walk past, then the Tuileries and Place de la Concorde on foot. The Seine by boat in the afternoon, and the Eiffel Tower held back for dusk, when the light goes and the tower starts to sparkle on the hour.

  3. Stage 03

    Rail to the Alps

A morning TGV east out of Paris, changing onto the panoramic line that climbs into the Bernese Oberland. You reach Interlaken with the afternoon still in hand. The town sits on a neck of land between two lakes, and the walk along the Aare is the whole introduction you need.

  4. Stage 04

    Jungfraujoch

The cogwheel railway up through Kleine Scheidegg and then inside the mountain itself, surfacing at 3,454 metres at the highest railway station in Europe. Ice palace, snow plateau, and the Aletsch glacier running away below. We hold this for the clearest forecast day of the three.

  5. Stage 05

    Lauterbrunnen

The valley under the Jungfrau, where seventy-two waterfalls come off vertical walls and the Staubbach drops almost 300 metres past the village church. Cable car up to Grindelwald-First for the cliff walk if the legs are willing, then back down for a quiet last alpine evening.

  6. Stage 06

    Into Italy

Rail south through the Alps to Milan, changing there for the fast line to Rome. It is a travel day and a spectacular one: lakes, long tunnels, and then the abrupt switch into Italian light. You arrive in the evening for a short walk and an unhurried first Roman dinner.

  7. Stage 07

    Ancient Rome

The Colosseum on timed entry with a guide, then the Forum and Palatine Hill next door, which is where the city was actually run from. The afternoon is yours for Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain after dark, once the crowd thins and the lighting does the work.

  8. Stage 08

    Vatican

Early entry to the Vatican Museums, the long walk through the galleries, and the Sistine Chapel before the room fills up. St Peter's Basilica afterwards, with the dome climb optional and worth it. The evening crosses the river to Trastevere, the part of Rome that stayed local.

  9. Stage 09

    Florence

The fast train north takes about ninety minutes. The Duomo and the climb inside Brunelleschi's dome if you have booked it, the Uffizi in the afternoon, and sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, which is where every photograph you have ever seen of Florence was taken from.

  10. Stage 10

    Venice

Across the lagoon causeway by train, and from there everything is boats. The first vaporetto down the Grand Canal, St Mark's Square, then the back streets of Dorsoduro where the city goes quiet. Evening light on the lagoon is the reason people write badly about this place.

  11. Stage 11

    Fly South

A morning flight from Venice to Athens, around two and a half hours. Check in, then the Plaka quarter in the evening: tavernas in the streets under the Acropolis rock, which is lit from below and visible from most rooftops in the neighbourhood. A gentle day between two big ones.

  12. Stage 12

    Santorini

Across the Aegean by ferry or a short hop by air, then up onto the caldera rim. You check into a room facing the volcano with the sea eight hundred feet below it, and spend the rest of the afternoon doing nothing more ambitious than looking at that.

  13. Stage 13

    The Sunset

A catamaran day along the caldera wall with stops at the hot springs and the red and white beaches, and lunch cooked on board. Then Oia for the sunset, with seats arranged in advance so that you are watching it rather than standing in the crush on the castle steps.

  14. Stage 14

    The Return

Fly home from Santorini, usually via Athens. Fourteen days, five countries, and the particular disorientation of having been away long enough that your own house needs re-learning. Every transfer between the caldera and your front door is ours to worry about.
