The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Tbilisi

   Land and go straight into the old town, which is the whole reason this trip is short and still works: everything is walkable. Brick bathhouse domes, wooden balconies, a fortress on the ridge. A wine bar for the first night, where nothing on the list will be familiar and all of it is cheap.

2. Stage 02

   City

   Narikala fortress by cable car for the view over the river and the rooftops, then down through the lanes on foot. The sulphur baths in the afternoon, taken privately by the hour, with the optional scrub. Across the Peace Bridge after dark, when the glass canopy is lit.

3. Stage 03

   Wine Day

   East to Kakheti for the day, about two hours each way. Two family cellars where wine is still made in buried clay qvevri, a long lunch that will defeat you, and Sighnaghi on the way back: a walled town on a hill with the Caucasus across the valley.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   Mtskheta on the way to the airport, which was the capital before Tbilisi and holds Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, an eleventh-century church that is one of the most important buildings in the country. Then the flight home, three nights lighter in the wallet than almost any other European break.
