Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Before Anyone Else
Torii tunnels of Fushimi Inari, Kyoto
Highlights
- The senbon torii — ten thousand gates — with the path to yourself
- The full walk up Mount Inari, past where day visitors turn back
- Fox messengers and hundreds of miniature shrines along the route
- Breakfast at Nishiki market afterwards
The story
By ten o'clock the first hundred gates at Fushimi Inari are a queue of people photographing each other. At six there is nobody, the shrine is open — it never closes — and the light comes through the gaps in the vermilion.
You walk up rather than through. Past the tourist turnaround the crowd stops entirely and it becomes a mountain path with fox statues, small shrines and moss, all the way to the summit if you want it.
Itinerary
-
5.45am meet, on the mountain by six, the full loop with a guide who explains what the gates are and who paid for them, down by nine. Nishiki market for breakfast.
We'll WhatsApp you the full day-by-day itinerary — free, no calls unless you ask.
Inclusions
- English-speaking local guide
- The full Mount Inari walking loop
- Breakfast at Nishiki market
Exclusions
- Hotel pickup — we meet at Inari station

Know before you go
- The shrine is free and open 24 hours; what you are paying for is the guide and the hour
- The full loop is two to three hours of continuous uphill steps
- It rains often in Kyoto and the stone gets slick — grippy shoes
- A working shrine, not a monument: people are praying, so keep the voice down
