The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land and go straight to the gold souk in Deira, which is the right first stop because it sets your reference prices for everything that follows. Gold is sold by weight at the day's rate with the making charge negotiable, which is where the conversation happens. An abra back across the creek afterwards.

2. Stage 02

   Mall Day One

   The Dubai Mall for a full day, which sounds absurd until you see it: over a thousand shops, and the Shopping Festival discounts are real rather than decorative. The aquarium inside it is the sit-down break. The fountain show outside after dark, then dinner with the Burj Khalifa lit above you.

3. Stage 03

   Mall Day Two

   Mall of the Emirates in the morning for a different mix of brands, with Ski Dubai behind glass for the photograph nobody believes. The afternoon is whatever you have not finished, and the evening is dinner at the Marina, away from the shopping, so the trip has one non-retail memory.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   A last sweep of anything you talked yourself out of, then the tax refund desks at the airport, which need your receipts and your passport. Then home, several kilos heavier in the hold.
