The story

You have probably already seen the tank for free: its front wall faces the Dubai Mall concourse and people stand at it for a long time. The ticket takes you through the glass. A 48-metre acrylic tunnel runs through the bottom of the tank, eleven metres under the surface, with a 270-degree view; sand tiger sharks pass overhead close enough to count the teeth, rays settle on the roof of the tunnel and slide off, and the shoals turn as one when a diver goes in. The tank holds ten million litres and some 33,000 animals of more than 140 species, with over 300 sharks and rays, and the aquarium calls its sand tiger collection one of the largest anywhere.

The Underwater Zoo is on the level above and takes longer than people expect. Its best-known residents are the two king crocodiles, King Jock and Queen Missy, the pair nobody walks past quickly. Penguin Cove is the penguin habitat, and it is the part of the ticket small children ask to go back to. The mall's air-conditioning does the rest: this is the attraction to keep for the hottest afternoon of the trip.

Who it suits: families with children of any age (prams roll through the whole thing), seniors (flat and indoors), and couples who want an hour out of the heat between a mall afternoon and the fountain show outside. It is in the same mall as the Burj Khalifa entrance, so it pairs with an At the Top slot; the operator also lists a combined Burj and Aquarium ticket, which is on our Burj Khalifa page.
