The experience outline

1. Step 01

   Down the Gorge

   Leave Shillong early and drive south towards the Bangladesh border, around two and a half hours through waterfall country, with the plateau dropping away on the right and the plains of Bangladesh visible beyond it on a clear morning.

2. Step 02

   The Float

   The Umngot at Dawki, which in the dry months from roughly November to April runs so clear over a pale bed that the wooden boats appear to be floating in air. That is a real photograph and it is entirely seasonal: in monsoon the river runs green and fast and the effect is gone.

3. Step 03

   Village & Cave

   Mawlynnong afterwards, which markets itself as Asia's cleanest village and has a bamboo skywalk into the canopy, then Mawsmai cave on the way back, a lit limestone corridor you walk through in about twenty minutes and squeeze sideways in places. Back in Shillong by dark.
