What we work through with you

  1. Your dates and priorities

Tell us when you want to visit Prague, Vienna & Budapest, who is travelling and what you would change in the outline below.

  2. The route and pace

We discuss the 8D / 7N starting itinerary, your preferred stays and how much you want to fit in. Any changes depend on availability and are agreed in your written plan.

  3. Your written quote

Review the final arrangements, total price, inclusions and payment and cancellation terms before booking. An enquiry does not reserve this trip.

The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Prague

Land in Prague and walk into the Old Town Square as the light goes. The astronomical clock has been running since 1410 and performs on the hour, which is worth timing your arrival around. Dinner nearby, and a first look at the hundred spires the city gets its nickname from.

  2. Stage 02

    Castle Side

Over the Charles Bridge early, when the statues are silhouettes and the photographers have it largely to themselves, then up to Hradcany for Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral inside it. Down through the Lesser Town in the afternoon, and a proper Czech beer hall in the evening.

  3. Stage 03

    Rail to Vienna

A civilised late-morning train to Vienna, about four hours through Moravian farmland. Straight out to Schonbrunn in the afternoon for the Habsburg summer palace and the gardens climbing to the Gloriette, then Sachertorte in a coffeehouse, correctly, with the whipped cream on the side.

  4. Stage 04

    Vienna

The Hofburg and the imperial apartments in the morning, then the Ringstrasse on foot or by tram. The afternoon is coffeehouse hours, which in Vienna is a recognised activity rather than a gap in the plan. Standing-room tickets at the Staatsoper are available on the night and cost very little.

  5. Stage 05

    Rail to Budapest

Train on to Budapest, around two and a half hours, and the city arrives in two halves: hilly Buda on one bank, flat Pest on the other. Up to Castle Hill and the Fishermen's Bastion for sunset, with the Parliament building directly opposite across the Danube.

  6. Stage 06

    Buda & Pest

The thermal baths in the morning, which Budapest is famous for: hot outdoor pools, steam, and old men playing chess in the water. The Great Market Hall for lunch, and the ruin bars of the Jewish quarter in the evening, built inside abandoned buildings.

  7. Stage 07

    Danube Night

A free day for whatever you have been circling, then the reason this evening is protected: the Danube cruise after dark, when the lit Parliament building glows like a lantern along the water. It costs little, and it is worth planning the evening around.

  8. Stage 08

    The Return

Fly home from Budapest. Three capitals, two river banks, several thousand steps a day, and the discovery that the fairy-tale end of Europe costs considerably less than the postcard end of it.
