The story

You take a lift from the ground floor of the Dubai Mall and, about a minute later, the doors open on level 124 with the whole of Dubai laid out below: Sheikh Zayed Road running away in a straight line, the Palm on the coast, the desert going brown at the edges. Level 125 is one floor up with a second deck and the exhibits. The Sky ticket takes you higher, to level 148, where you get a lounge with refreshments and a quieter deck for about half an hour before continuing down to 124 and 125.

The experience is short and it is mostly about the light. Late afternoon into dusk, when the city goes from sand-coloured to a grid of lights, is what most people want, and the Burj prices that window higher and calls it prime time. Morning slots are cheaper and clearer; the sunrise option adds a morning treat. Queues are the honest caveat: at busy times the security line and the lift queue can take longer than the deck itself, which is why the fast-track options exist.

Who it suits: everyone on a first trip, honestly, and especially seniors, because there is no walking to speak of, and families, because children love the lift. Couples should book a slot that ends at dusk. The operator also lists two Dubai Fountain options on this ticket: the boardwalk, a walkway out over the fountain lake, and the lake ride on a small boat during the fountain show, both of which pair naturally with an evening slot.

What your ticket covers

Opening hours and entry times are confirmed for your date.

  1. On the transfer options a vehicle collects you from your hotel about an hour before the slot. Ticket-only guests reach the At the Top entrance on the lower ground floor of the Dubai Mall themselves, 30 to 45 minutes before the slot time on the voucher.

  2. Bag check, then the lift to level 124. Fast-track tickets use a shorter line.

  3. Levels 124 and 125, with an outdoor terrace on 124. On the Sky tickets, level 148 first, for about 30 minutes with refreshments, then 124 and 125. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour.

  4. You exit into the Dubai Mall, a few minutes' walk from the fountain lake. Evening slots pair well with the fountain show.

  • Prime-time slots (the late-afternoon to sunset window) cost more than other hours at the Burj. The operator does not split its rates by hour, so your captain will confirm with the operator which slots the quoted rate covers before you pay.
  • Slots are timed. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early; late arrivals may be refused or moved to a later slot at the Burj's discretion.

  • The outdoor terrace on level 124 is exposed: warm in the afternoon, breezy at night. Carry a light layer in winter.
  • Haze is common in summer and after sandstorms; on those days the view is softer. Morning slots are usually clearest.
  • Wheelchairs and prams are fine: it is lifts all the way. Tell your captain so the operator notes it.
  • Your the operator voucher gives the exact slot, level and inclusions for the option you choose; the captain shares it before you pay.
  • Availability and the slot are confirmed by the operator only when your captain books. The operator can decline a booking if the price has changed or the slot is sold out, and you are told before you pay.
