The story
Above Pahalgam the road splits into three valleys and each one is worth an hour. Betaab is the manicured one, named after a film shot there. Aru is a meadow village where the trekking routes start. Chandanwari is where the Amarnath yatra sets off.
The Lidder river runs beside the road the whole way, loud and very cold.
What happens

-
A full day above Pahalgam in a local taxi-union vehicle, which is the only transport permitted on these roads and is arranged for you. Betaab valley comes first, named after the film shot there in 1983 and genuinely as green as that suggests, with the Lidder running through a floor of meadow between pine slopes. Aru is further on at about 2,400 metres, a village and a wide meadow that is the trailhead for the Kolahoi glacier and much quieter than Betaab. Chandanwari at the head of the valley is the third, sixteen kilometres up and the starting point of the Amarnath pilgrimage, where a snow bridge over the river survives into early summer. The Lidder is beside you the whole way, and time is allowed at each rather than a photograph and a departure.
