The story
Pura Besakih sits on the south-west slope of Mount Agung, at about 1,000 metres, in Karangasem regency (indonesia.travel, checked 26 Sep 2026), roughly two to two and a half hours by road from Ubud or Kuta. Indonesia's tourism board calls it the island's largest spiritual complex and the holiest temple for Bali's Hindus, nicknamed the Mother Temple: 23 separate temples across the site, arranged so that buildings closer to the mountain and higher in elevation stand for closeness to the divine. Its main temple, Penataran Agung, is where the complex's major ceremonies are held. The tiered meru roofs and carved stone gateways across the complex reflect the Tri Hita Karana idea at the centre of Balinese Hindu belief: a balance between people, nature and the divine. The operator's day runs about 8 hours from your Bali hotel.
What it feels like: the drive out to Karangasem brings you to the foot of Mount Agung, the volcano the temple sits below. Once inside, Besakih is not one building but a hillside of them, terrace after terrace climbing towards the main temple, with carved stone gates between courtyards and worshippers moving between them on temple days. A sarong and sash are the expected dress here, rented at the entrance if you don't bring your own.
Who this suits, and why: families and couples wanting Bali's most significant Hindu site rather than a smaller local temple; seniors and solo travellers drawn to its scale and history; and anyone with an interest in Balinese Hindu belief and architecture. It is a long day by road, so it suits a traveller happy with a full day out rather than a short half-day stop.
