The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Sawadee Bangkok

   Land, check in, and take the first evening on the Chao Phraya: a dinner cruise past the lit temples and the old town, which is the gentlest possible introduction to a city that is not gentle. It also shows you the river geography you will use tomorrow.

2. Stage 02

   Temples & Markets

   The Grand Palace at opening time, before the heat and the crowds, with Wat Phra Kaew and the Emerald Buddha inside the complex; dress code is enforced and covered shoulders and knees are required. Wat Pho next door for the forty-six-metre reclining Buddha. Asiatique by the river in the evening.

3. Stage 03

   Floating Market → Pattaya

   An early start for Damnoen Saduak, where the produce market happens from boats in a canal and the sellers cook on them. Early is the whole point; by mid-morning it is mostly tourists. Then the transfer down to Pattaya, around two hours, and the boardwalk at sunset.

4. Stage 04

   Coral Island

   Speedboat out to Coral Island for the day: clear water, parasailing and banana boats for those who want them, and a beach lunch for those who do not. Back in the late afternoon, and the Alcazar cabaret in the evening, which is a full theatre production and better than its reputation suggests.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   Back up to Bangkok and the flight home, with a last mango sticky rice at the airport because it is the one thing you cannot get properly anywhere else.
