- Step 01
The Morning
A half day starting at the Grand Palace for opening time, which matters twice over: the crowds arrive by mid-morning and the heat arrives shortly after. The complex was the royal residence from 1782 and covers about 218,000 square metres, with Wat Phra Kaew inside it holding the Emerald Buddha, a 66-centimetre jade figure whose robes are changed by the king three times a year. Dress code is enforced at the gate, meaning covered shoulders and knees for everyone. Then the ten-minute walk south to Wat Pho for the reclining Buddha, 46 metres long and finished in gold leaf, with 108 bronze bowls along the far wall for dropping coins into. The temple also houses the country's oldest massage school, and an hour there is the correct way to finish before the midday heat.
