The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Landing in Ubud

   Fly in via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore and transfer up to Ubud, which is ninety minutes inland and noticeably cooler than the coast. Drop the bags at the jungle stay, then a welcome dinner once everyone has surfaced. The valley is loud after dark, which takes one night to get used to and is then the best part.

2. Stage 02

   Terraces & Temples

   Tegallalang at sunrise, on purpose: the terraces are famous, which means the coaches arrive by nine and the light is gone by ten. Tirta Empul afterwards, a spring-fed water temple where the purification ritual is open to visitors who follow the etiquette, and it is more moving than you expect. Pool afternoon.

3. Stage 03

   Waterfall Day

   Three waterfalls in a day. Tibumana, which is wide and quiet and swimmable; Tukad Cepung, which falls into a cave lit by a shaft of light through the roof around mid-morning; and Kanto Lampo, which you climb over the rock face of. Jungle lunch between them, and no dry clothes by the end.

4. Stage 04

   To the Cliffs

   South to the Bukit peninsula and the cliffs. The afternoon is beach, then Uluwatu temple at sunset for the kecak fire dance: a chorus of men chanting in place of a gamelan, performed in an amphitheatre on the cliff edge with the sea 70 metres below.

5. Stage 05

   The Cliff Supper

   A free day, with a surf lesson at Padang Padang or a beach club as the usual choices. The evening is the reason the day is empty: dinner at a cliff-edge table above the ocean, which is the Bali equivalent of the fire night on our other trips and lands just as hard.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   A slow morning and the flight home. Five nights, two Balis that barely resemble each other, and an alarm clock set for sunrise more often than anyone agreed to in advance.
