The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Sydney

   Land in Sydney and into a harbour-view room, which on this trip is the point rather than an upgrade. The first evening is Circular Quay and the Opera House, either for a performance or just for dinner underneath the sails with the bridge lit on the other side of the water.

2. Stage 02

   Coves & Ferries

   The quieter harbour. A ferry out to Watsons Bay for the cliffs at The Gap and fish eaten outside, then across to Manly for the beach and the walk to Shelly Cove. Back through the heads at dusk, which is when the bridge and the Opera House come on and everyone stops talking.

3. Stage 03

   Fly North

   Fly north to Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, about two and a half hours. The island is small, there are more golf buggies than cars, and the rest of the day is a pool facing west and a sunset over the other seventy-three islands in the group.

4. Stage 04

   The Sail

   The sail. A catamaran out to Whitehaven Beach, seven kilometres of sand that is 98 per cent pure silica, so fine it squeaks and does not hold heat. Then up to the Hill Inlet lookout, where the tide pushes the white sand through blue water in patterns that change every day.

5. Stage 05

   Reef From Above

   The seaplane, if you are taking it: low over the reef to Heart Reef, a coral formation you cannot see any other way, with a landing in the lagoon at Whitehaven for a beach hour that you will have largely to yourselves. The alternative is a beach day and no aircraft at all.

6. Stage 06

   Island Slow

   Deliberately slow. Snorkelling off the island's fringing reef in the morning, breakfast next to the koalas at the wildlife park if that appeals, and a spa afternoon. The island is small enough that nothing takes long, which is the whole design of this day.

7. Stage 07

   Back to Sydney

   Back to Sydney on an afternoon flight, and a last night at The Rocks, the oldest part of the city, in the sandstone lanes under the bridge. The farewell dinner is here, and the walk back along the quay afterwards is the thing people remember about the trip.

8. Stage 08

   The Return

   Fly home from Sydney. Eight days, one of the world's best harbours, a beach that squeaks, and the particular problem of having started a marriage with a standard that will be difficult to maintain.
