The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Sydney

Land in Sydney and go straight to Circular Quay, which puts the Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge on the other and settles the question of whether the flight was worth it. Dinner around the quay with the ferries coming and going, and an early night against the jet lag.

  2. Stage 02

    Harbour & Bondi

The Manly ferry from Circular Quay, thirty minutes across open harbour and the best value view in Australia. Back in the afternoon for the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk along the clifftops past the ocean pools. Darling Harbour in the evening once the light has gone.

  3. Stage 03

    Blue Mountains

West into the Blue Mountains, named for the haze the eucalyptus oil throws off the forest. Echo Point for the Three Sisters, then Scenic World, where the railway down into the valley is the steepest passenger railway in the world at 52 degrees. Rainforest walks at the bottom.

  4. Stage 04

    Fly North

Fly north to Cairns, about three hours, into genuine tropics. The esplanade lagoon is a saltwater swimming pool on the seafront, which exists because the sea here has crocodiles and stingers in it. The night market in the evening, and an early start booked for tomorrow.

  5. Stage 05

    The Reef

The Great Barrier Reef. Out to a pontoon moored on the outer reef, which gives you a stable platform for the day: snorkelling straight off the back, a semi-submersible for anyone who would rather stay dry, a marine biologist talk, and an introductory dive available for first-timers.

  6. Stage 06

    Kuranda

The Kuranda railway, built by hand in the 1880s, climbing through fifteen tunnels and past Barron Falls into the rainforest village at the top. Markets and the butterfly sanctuary up there, then the Skyrail gondola back down, gliding just above the canopy with two stops in it.

  7. Stage 07

    Daintree

North to the Daintree, one of the oldest continuously surviving rainforests on earth at around 180 million years, where it runs straight down to the reef. Mossman Gorge and its swimming holes, a boardwalk at Cape Tribulation, and a river cruise where the crocodiles are genuinely wild.

  8. Stage 08

    Free Day

Free. Most people go back out to the reef on a different boat to a different site, because one day out there is rarely enough. The alternative is the Atherton Tablelands waterfall circuit inland, with three waterfalls you can swim underneath and no salt water involved.

  9. Stage 09

    The Return

Fly home from Cairns. Nine days, two World Heritage areas, one of the world's great harbours, and the specific sunburn you only get from a day on the water pretending you applied enough sunscreen.
