The story

Yas Waterworld is the outdoor water park on Yas Island, a few minutes from Ferrari World. The park lists more than 60 rides, slides and experiences, from a lazy river with no height limit to drop slides that need 120 cm. Six hours in the park is typical; on a cool winter day families stay until closing.

What it feels like: wet, loud and happy. The sun is strong, the water is cool, and the sound is children shrieking down the slides and the thump of the wave pool. Ahmedabad families who know the Gujarat water parks will find the same idea done at a much bigger scale, with a pearl-diving theme running through it, shaded loungers to claim early, and long queues at the headline slides by noon. The lazy river is where the grandparents and the small children end up, and it is a good place to be.

Who this suits, and why: the school-holiday family with children from about six upwards, because at least ten rides take children under 1.2 metres and the rest of the park keeps the older ones busy; friends groups in the cooler months, who treat it as a full day out; and the family with teenagers as the second park on a Yas two-park pass. Grandparents can come along for the lazy river and the shade, but it is an outdoor day in the sun, so pick October to April for them.
